Dwayne Brown
President, Since 2012
Dwayne Brown has dual bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Clemson University and in Physics from the College of Charleston. He has a professional engineering license in the state of Delaware. Dwayne has eleven years of experience in Transportation Engineering. He has worked on various tasks for highway design projects from the initial design phase to final plan set submittal. These projects were completed for multiple Departments of Transportation.
Over a decade ago, he formed a close personal and professional relationship with Armin Schmalz. Early in 2012 both set out to form a corporation partnership in the niche market of proposal management. Together, they envisioned if solid engineering talent were focused on proposal development and the strategies that differentiate winning from losing, they could build a competitive proposal management company. In doing their research on whether to acquire an existing company or formulate a new company, they came upon the methodologies of DSDJ, Inc. who was a dominant proposal force in the 1990’s and mid-way through the first decade of this century. The company had become idle and needed to be resurrected with an infusion of new leadership and younger management.
Armin Schmalz
CEO, Since 2012
Armin Schmalz is a graduate from the Pennsylvania State University with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Upon completing this degree, he attended Drexel University where he obtained a masters degree in Civil Engineering and Engineering Management. Besides holding multiple degrees, Armin has successfully passed the Engineer-In-Training Exam as well as completing project management courses at Villanova University.
Armin has worked in the engineering field with skill sets that include a detailed understanding of engineering planning, integration, and budget driven execution. Skills include studies, analysis, and cost estimation. While acquiring these skills, Armin sharpened his skills that lead to winning proposals. Armin is a graduate of DSDJ's intensive proposal management seminar and orals presentation where he honed the skills needed to win competetive efforts.
In revitalizing the idle DSDJ, Inc., Armin connected with the original principals of the organization to preserve and promote the original methodologies of the corporation to maintain dominance in the proposal industry. These methodologies are now being coupled with the latest technologies to again move DSDJ, Inc. to the forefront of the proposal industry under a younger leadership.
Duane Turnbull
Principal Advisor, Since 1987
Duane Turnbull received national recognition first for his work as a Contel Program Manager turning around a failing program to rebuild their aging wholesale supply system for the U.S. Air Force. Next, he took on the assignment as the CACI Inc. Logistics Program Manager for the Air Force's Consolidated Space Operations Center where he introduced the Air Force to new concepts in supporting commercial satellite equipment.
In 1987, Duane Turnbull founded DSDJ, Inc. as an Integrated Engineering Company. He then introduced cutting edge methodologies to the proposal process. Duane formed a team of the smartest technical people he had known in his 20 year Air Force career - a career that saw him promoted eight times and receive special recognition from the President for his work. Under his leadership, his DSDJ team performed human engineering analysis on the target handoff system on the Apache Helicopter and worked the logistics and maintenance/support concepts for helicopter engine sand filtration systems deployed for Operation Desert Storm- all major success stories.
Wanting to cut down his pace, Duane agreed to work solely as a trainer and dedicated consultant to Milcom's proposal effort. Over the next five years, Duane not only trained the small company, but influenced their teaming and theme driven strategies for two consecutive wins totaling neary 2 billion dollars. Duane's methodology for proposal cost savings is published on the Internet by the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP). His lessons learned now form the methodologies employed by DSDJ, Inc.
Bruce Wooden
Principal Advisor, Since 2012
Bruce Wooden is a Naval Academy graduate with advanced engineering credentials from M.I.T. He spent nearly two decades as a young Naval Officer with multiple shipboard engineering assignments. One of his many assignments on active duty was to supervise the design and construction of nuclear submarines as well as the overhaul of both surface ships and submarines.
He has maintained a professional relationship with DSDJ, Inc. for over 25 years. First, he lent his expertise in noise and quieting technology to help Duane Turnbull engineer a proposal win over Westinghouse in the first of many competitions for the Navy's Electric Drive Program.
Bruce provided DSDJ, Inc. personnel access to the best engineers in the country to solve technical needs and problems during proposal preparations. He is a graduate of DSDJ's Proposal Seminar and has been a guest Instructor in DSDJ's Business Development Seminar.
